February 21, 1945

As we approached the stern of the carrier Bismark you could see where it had blown apart. AMD was half way under the water. Made way towards bow of carrier. Bandits 1920 (7:20pm) (Enemy planes attacking again). We are standing by the carrier and it has an approximately 45 degree list. You can see her personnel on the bow climbing about and jumping into the sea. We are approximately 300 yards off her beam trying to get in close enough to rescue and get rescue equipment ready. We can see at least 50 men in the water by the carrier. They need to get away from here. 2008 (8:08pm) Oh God the carrier has turned completely over trapping hundreds of her men under the carrier deck on its starboard side with the bow sticking approximately 20 some feet out of the water. 2014 (8:14pm) Carrier's stern has gone down first and now the carrier is disappearing...it's gone! We can see approximately 30+ men in the water with oil slick all around. We are trying to pick some of them up. Guys are hanging onto their buddies who look like they are already dead...wouldn't let go to grab the life saving ropes we were throwing to them.
